Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Implements EyeArt® AI System for Diabetic Eye Screening

April 7, 2021 – The Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS) at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, the oldest medical school in New Jersey and a leading U.S. healthcare provider, recently implemented the EyeArt® AI system for diabetic retinopathy eye screening at University Hospital of New Jersey in Newark. This represents the first EyeArt implementation in a teaching hospital’s emergency department with live connectivity to the ophthalmology department tele-ophthalmology solution.

“We are thrilled to work with the EyeArt AI technology for diabetic retinopathy eye testing with results available in less than a minute,” commented Ben Szirth, PhD, Director of Telemedicine and Applied Science at the IOVS. “Since 50% of people with diabetes don’t know they may have retinopathy, the EyeArt AI system is a game changer in potentially saving vision years. This artificial intelligence system offers a great teaching tool to our patients, medical students as well as our faculty. We have had the opportunity of investigating the EyeArt system in known populations affected by diabetes for the past 4 years and were impressed with its technology and expanding capabilities. Some of our research findings were reported at ARVO 2020 in the scientific abstract titled Accuracy of Automated Retinal Software for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection in Type I Diabetics vs Human Graders”.

Ben Szirth concluded by saying “We are delighted to begin expanding our tele-ophthalmology services through our emergency department by incorporating the EyeArt AI system. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need to optimize many aspects of patient care, and technology that brings care closer to the patient creates a win-win situation for the patient and provider.”
